In today’s world, where actions often speak louder than words, the call to be a living epistle is more relevant than ever. The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:2-3 (AMP):
"You are our letter [of recommendation], written in our hearts, recognized and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts."
This passage tells us that our lives should be a clear and undeniable testimony of the Gospel. We are called to be living letters, displaying the grace, truth, and love of Christ in everything we do.
What Does It Mean to Be a Living Epistle?
Unlike a letter written on paper, a living epistle is written on the heart, and it is read by those around us. This means that people should be able to see the reality of Christ not just in our words, but in our character, choices, and daily interactions.
1. Integrity and Holiness
A living epistle is marked by a commitment to righteousness. This means living with honesty, purity, and a deep reverence for God. In a world filled with compromise, our lives should stand as a testament to the transforming power of Christ.
"But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in all your conduct [be set apart from the world by your godly character and moral courage]." – 1 Peter 1:15 (AMP)
2. Love and Compassion
Jesus said that the world would recognize His disciples by their love (John 13:35). As living epistles, we should reflect His love in how we treat others—offering kindness, patience, and forgiveness, even when it’s difficult.
"Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you." – Ephesians 4:32 (AMP)
3. Obedience and Faithfulness
A living epistle is obedient to God’s Word and faithful in all things. We are not called to perfection, but to a life of submission to God’s will, trusting Him in every season.
"Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding." – Proverbs 3:5 (AMP)
4. Witness and Influence
Our lives should inspire others to seek Christ. Whether in the workplace, at home, or in public, we are always representing Jesus. The way we speak, respond to challenges, and treat others is an open letter that people read daily.
"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven." – Matthew 5:16 (AMP)
Are You a Letter That Points to Christ?
Every believer has a testimony, a story that God is writing through their life. The question is, what does your letter say? Does it point others to Jesus, or does it reflect the culture of the world?
To be a living epistle, we must:
Stay in God’s Word, allowing Him to shape our hearts.
Walk in the Spirit, letting our actions reflect Christ’s love and truth.
Be intentional about how we represent the Kingdom of God.
As the world reads our lives, let’s ensure that what they see is the message of grace, redemption, and the power of a transformed life.
May we be letters written by God, read by men, and leading others to the hope found in Christ alone.
What steps can you take today to be a clearer letter for Christ? Let’s start writing with our lives!
